Regime-based positioning

The most reliable VIX strategies adapt to the current volatility regime rather than applying a fixed rule. In calm regimes (VIX 12–16), selling premium into elevated implied volatility has a structural edge. In stressed regimes, the priority shifts to protection and tail-risk awareness.

Term structure roll strategies

VIX futures in steep contango offer a natural roll yield — the front month decays toward spot as expiry approaches. This is the basis for short-volatility strategies, but it works best when regime context confirms calm conditions and no term structure inversion is emerging.

Mean-reversion vs momentum

• VIX tends to mean-revert in calm and elevated regimes — fading spikes is viable with discipline.
• In panic regimes, VIX can trend for days. Mean-reversion assumptions fail during genuine stress.
• Momentum signals (sustained VIX above 25 with flattening term structure) often indicate regime transition, not a single spike.

Implied vs realized spread
