How an analyst might read this

Scenario

VIX declines from 28 to 22 over several sessions while the term structure has not yet re-steepened.

Interpretation

Compression is occurring, but structural caution may remain if defensive positioning continues. Falling volatility is an observation; normalization is a structural condition — the two are not the same.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Can volatility compression occur while risk remains elevated?
Yes. Compression measures the contraction in observed volatility; it does not measure the structural conditions beneath. An elevated regime can compress for days while curve shape, skew, and hedging demand remain stressed.
What is fragile compression?
Compression that occurs without supporting structural repair — the curve has not re-steepened, skew has not narrowed, and hedging demand has not faded. Volatility is quiet, but the structure that produced stress is intact.
How is compression different from normalization?
Compression is observational — vol fell. Normalization is structural — the curve repaired, realized contracted toward implied, and hedging demand faded across weeks. Compression can precede normalization, or precede the next expansion.
Why do quiet sessions sometimes precede sharp expansion?
When compression occurs without structural repair, positioning becomes thin and dealer gamma can flip on a small catalyst. The quiet is fragile, not resolved.
